I Don’t Understand

You poke and prod with words of outrage
Falsities fueled by hate and greed
Sharpened by ignorance and the promise of power
You sit in wait for a reaction
What is it you are looking for?
I don’t understand

I always imagined leaders
Fighting to unite and not divide
Leaning on a strong foundation looking forward
With empathy and compassion
Bringing change for a new tomorrow
I don’t understand

Conversations are impossible
Communication has been thwarted
If I take up the gauntlet and respond
My words are met with condescension
And you revel in mocking my morality
I just don’t understand
